first 24 hours: quick checklist
- Call your insurance company/agent right away. Renters: also notify your landlord/owner. Adjusters can help with emergency repairs and securing your home.
- Secure the property (board-up/tarp) to prevent further damage. If you can’t reach your agent, contact a licensed contractor or restoration firm.
- Find safe shelter for your family and pets. If uninsured or displaced, American Red Cross can assist 24/7 with food, clothing, and housing at 1-855-891-7325.
- Get your fire report (often needed for claims): available from our station, typically within 72 hours of the incident. 300 N. Tennille Ave., Donalsonville, GA 39845.
Returning Home Safely
- Wait for clearance from fire officials before re-entering.
- Watch for hazards: weakened structures, hot spots, electrical dangers, sharp debris, and poor air quality.
- Utilities: have gas/electric/water inspected and restored by qualified professionals.
- Protect valuables/prescriptions and gather critical documents (IDs, insurance cards, deeds, titles).
Insurance & Documentation
- Document damage with photos/video before cleanup.
- Save receipts for board-up, lodging, meals, and emergency purchases.
- Start your claim and ask your adjuster about contents inventories and approved vendors.
- Get a copy of your fire report to share with your insurer (see below).
